Hands-On Lab

The hands-on lab is designed for students that have completed a Sterile Processing program and have a thorough understanding of the theory behind Sterile Processing processes, techniques, standards, and regulations, but have not had the opportunity to practice Sterile Processing processes. Students will gain hands-on experience in the following areas:  Decontamination, Prep and Pack, Sterilization, and Sterile Storage and Distribution.

During labs, students will review the following techniques as well other techniques:

  • Follow IFUs for disinfecting chemicals

  • Follow 3 step method for cleaning instruments

  • Use the correct cycle for instrument disinfection

  • Don and Doff proper PPE

  • Learn how to inspect instruments for cleanliness and functionality

  • Learn how to test instruments for dullness, and functionality

  • Flush lumens with sterile water

  • Arrange instruments based on count sheet

  • How to use chemical indicators

  • Learn how to wrap trays

  • Inspect scopes for alignment, dents, and damage

  • Learn how to leak test flexible scopes

  • Use the correct brush size for cleaning flexible scope
